This is a fascinating tale spun around the historically vaporous parentage of one of history's greatest sages. Though fiction, Reade weaves numerous real figures from the time into his tale, including Hans Memling, Philip the Good, and Fra Colonna. The language and phrases are antique, but beautiful and highly descriptive. Reade reimagines the lives of the sage's parents, creating a compelling narrative that highlights all the dangers, jealousies, loves, and joys of those harsh times. And of course, he underscores the tension between the sacred and the human that is the basis for the book's title. Wonderful tale.Product details

The Cloister and the Hearth Charles Reade 9781523701629 Books Reviews
Tears and smiles and laughter and prayers are just a tiny fraction of emotions this delightfully told tale has left carved deep in my psyche... forever to be one of my most favorite of all favorites.
I read an abridged version of "The Cloister and the Hearth". A book of 750 pages is compressed into a slim volume of 176 pages plus limited annotations. Boy, did I feel like I was missing something. Yet I have no desire now to buy the unabridged version and hopefully better annotated, I know the plot. So my advice on this book is "Don't get an abridged version!" Is the book worth reading? I can form no true opinion, I can only say that what I got was not worth the price. To save the reader the effort, my version was English Literature Series #118, Macmillan and Company.
Loved this story but did not realize until I got to the end on my that this is an abbreviated version. If you want the entire 785 page book, choose another version.
Top three on my all-time reading list, numero uno for a romance novel.
Just a great, great, read.
It is a classic for good reason.
This is a fast moving adventure story which is set in the late middle ages. It is a book which is hard to put down, provided that you appreciate really good language usage. It promotes an understanding of the way of life in those days which it makes easy to fathom and appreciate.
This is one of those books that kept me awake far into the night and distracted through the days until I could pick it up again! It is written in old English style, so will not be enjoyable for some audiences who prefer modern non-classical english. It is a VERY long book so ensure that you have time for this or your days will be ruined until you finally finish it!
Total rip off. Cover was nice, but inside were a few bad photocopies of some pages. Most of the book was missing, and what was there was very poor quality. I’m shocked that would sell this and call it a book!
